Our Assistant Conductor: Kayla Avery

Although Kayla Avery is new to her role as AWC’s Assistant Conductor, she has been a part of our community for many years. Kayla first joined Southern Arizona Women’s Chorus in 2011, following her mother, Kim Avery, who joined in 2006. She performed as a chorus member and soloist with us at the Women in Song festival in 2013, as well as joining our tour of northern France in 2016.
AWC created the new Assistant Conductor position in fall 2025 to better serve the needs of our growing chorus.
Kayla’s musical journey first began with learning classical violin in elementary school, and later teaching herself piano and guitar. According to her parents, Kayla was singing before she could talk. Throughout her life, a strong love of music has been instilled through singing at church, playing in school, and by being surrounded by music in her family. Her cultural experiences and travels to Europe and Asia have inspired her to incorporate music from all over the world in nearly every genre in her personal music library, from video games to classical ballets.
As an employee of the Disneyland Resort, she joined the Disneyland Cast Choir and performed at the celebrated Candlelight Processional in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, she shared directorship of the Tucson Summer Chorus with her father, Keith Avery. The same year, as Director of Music at her church, she organized and conducted a Christmas choir.
The human voice is an expression of our soul. What’s inside us comes out through the medium of our voice whether it is speaking or singing.

Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.

A painter paints pictures on canvas, but musicians paint their pictures on silence.

Three Great Ways to Support Us
AWC depends on tuition, ticket sales, and — like most nonprofits — your financial support. Because of COVID, our concert attendance has been small and, while we have reduced our expenses, we still rely on (and appreciate) your generosity. So please help any way you can.
1 Donate
Donate to AWC and support great music. We’re a 501(c)3 charitable organization. Donating online is easy, fast, and secure.
2 Sponsor
Sponsoring a concert comes with perks. We publish your ad in our program and feature your logo (with a link) on our website, so it’s a great value.
